New CPR Guidelines

CC
Did you know that less than one-third of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR! There are some countries, especially Scandinavian ones, which can be proud that their numbers are much higher, but the rest of us are performing poorly in helping others survive. This is a shame, because effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest, can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.

CPR has been invented 50 years ago, but still as lot of people could not care less. I guess they are thinking sudden cardiac arrest has nothing to do with them, it cannot happen to them. But they are wrong! It can happen to anyone, even young people, and sometimes without any warning signs. In fact almost 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home, so everyone can easily find themselves in a situation where they are completely ignorant of what to do. Please, don’t be one of those people.

My company: Ivor Medical

Ivor Medical website
Dear visitors and friends, I give you Ivor Medical πŸ™‚
Ivor Medical is a company which I have started in order to develop my invention for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Some of you will remember my talk from Mobile Monday Amsterdam event earlier this year, where for the first time I have presented my invention which is intended to relieve rescuers’ fatigue, as well as provide feedback during CPR. After being awarded with several prestigious awards from international innovation fairs, I have decided to seriously pursue the development of my invention into a product available for market. So far, my company has developed a mobile application for CPR feedback called CPR PRO, which is already available in the iTunes store, and will soon also be available for Android phones. My cradle for holding a mobile phone during CPR is also in its final stage of development, and I expect it to be available for sale by the end of this year.

Go ahead and visit Ivor Medical website to learn more. It goes without saying that your suggestions are always welcomed.

Super Sexy CPR

Company called Fortnight Lingerie has launched an interesting campaign for their products.
What they did was shoot a short educational CPR video. Some procedures in it aren’t exactly correct, but nevertheless it is very educational πŸ™‚
Hmmmm, let me see that again……

G for Geneva, G for Gold

I just came back home from 38th Exhibition of Inventions Geneva held in Geneva, Switzerland. Among around a thousand inventions, including 55 from class M (Medicine, Surgery, Hygiene, Orthopedics, Materials for the handicapped), I have demonstrated my CPR device (you can see it in my presentation from Amsterdam). The whole experience was truly fantastic and made even sweeter at the end, since my invention was awarded a gold medal from the international jury. Big thank you goes out to people from Noven, StivTrade, Croatian Association of Inventors, and Istrian Inventors.

For a quick preview, take a look at the short video below. More media will follow.

Ladies of the night to use AEDs

A well known Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, writes about an interesting initiative among prostitutes in the Ticino region of Switzerland. Lugano, a city in this region, is known to be somewhat of a sex capital with more than 38 sex clubs, which are frequently visited by man from neighboring Italy. Some of these man do not come home alive. Let’s just say they died happy, if you know what I mean πŸ˜‰

However, this is in no way good for business, so lovely ladies who work in these clubs decided to do something about it. They want to get trained in CPR, as well as equip their work place with automated external defibrillators (AED). An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Way to go girls, you rock! Fantastic initiative indeed.

Mobile Monday Amsterdam impressions

Ivor Kovic @Mobile Monday Amsterdam Several day ago I came back home after presenting at the Mobile Monday Amsterdam event titled Mobile Health. That is me on the left πŸ™‚

I am still impressed by the whole thing. First of all I have to congratulate the organizers (Marc, Yuri, Maarten, Sam, and Martijn) for doing a great job. They fully supported all the speakers from the first contact to the end of the event. The venue where the event took place was an actual church, De Duif, and it was a spectacular choice. From the moment I entered it, I was just blown away. Beautiful light, colors, art, atmosphere. Everything was ready for a great event. I was the first speaker to present after a short break in the middle of the program, and I had so much fun doing it. Mostly because of the crowd which was very educated and full of interesting people. It was such a delight to present to them.

Ivor Kovic @Mobile Monday Amsterdam In my talk, that is me on the right πŸ™‚ I focused on demonstrating how mobile technology has changed the way medical workers treat patients. I started with the most basic examples like the ability to alert emergency medical services with the mobile phone, moved on to more advance staff like accessing the electronic patient record using a smart phone, and finished with demonstrating two cool extensions used to hack the iPhone and give it additional functions useful in medicine. One of these hacks is actual a project of my own, which I will be writing more about soon. For now you can check out my slideshow, although a video of my talk should soon be available as well.

By the way, be sure to check out slideshows from all other presenters who appeared in the event. Slideshare even put the spotlight on the event on their front page.

Also take a look at some gorgeous photographs from the event taken by Hidde van der Lijn.
